Spaces for nature to thrive, allowing endogenous species to survive in mutually beneficial balance were implemented at the heart of the garden, and within the park.
Our estate is classified as a LPO (the League for the Protection of Birds) refuge. We help endogenous species, such as the chickadee, the blackbird, the jay, the woodpecker, the swift, the passerine bird, the sparrow, the turtledove, the grey heron, and the wagtail survive through the winter by feeding them mostly with organic sunflower seeds.
We have also set up several birdhouses, adapted to different species. Along with that, we have recently installed our first beehive, and we hope to get our first harvest of honey next year, for our guests to enjoy at breakfast. For now, we’re letting our beautiful bees get used to their new environment.
In the winter 2018-2019, we will welcome a chicken coop, probably in close proximity to the beehives, having discovered that chickens are a formidable predator for the Asian hornet.
They will also provide the freshest eggs for breakfast.
Our park is remarkable : it’s the home to some of the oldest and tallest trees in Saint-Jean, including a 40 metre high linden tree, and a thicket of twelve cedar, the highest of which culminates at more than 30 metres.
The ONF (the National Office for Forests) were unable to identify some of the trees, and they probably are the result of Indian or American imports in the 19th century, at a time when it was fashionable. They stand side by side with bower trees, chestnut trees, hazelnut trees, walnut trees, and several types of maple trees.
This natural ecosystem allows for a large number of ladybugs and dragonflies to prosper, eliminating naturally and efficiently all the mosquitoes from our estate. They probably also participate in feeding the birds in the summer.
